Our Services
General Health/Vaccinations
Horses can encounter health issues just as any other pet can. Fortunately, the great majority of these issues can be prevented through regular wellness exams and proper home care. Horse owners who can expect that Western Prairie Equine Service can provide preventative health plans for their equine animals.
Chiropractic
Animal chiropractic is not meant to replace traditional veterinary care, but rather an integrative method that when used in conjunction with traditional veterinary care can help restore and maintain the horse's strength, vigor, and well being. Maintaining proper structural alignment also permits optional function of muscles, nerves, and tissue supporting joints, resulting in improved movement, stance, endurance, and flexibility. Western Prairie Equine Service has over 15 years of experience in providing Equine Chiropractic Care.
Lameness
Lameness in the horse is a serious and painful problem with numerous possible causes, and it is important to notice the signs early to improve the chances of successful treatment. Lameness can stem from pain and inflammation to severe injury to the feet, bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Multiple limbs may also be involved which can complicate the lameness issues. Western Prairie Equine Service has the latest technology to help in diagnosing the cause of your horse’s lameness. For example, the Equinosis Q is a software assisted veterinary diagnostic system that provides objective measurements to reach a more accurate assessment within the lameness exam; including recognizing compensatory patterns which helps suggest a primary limb when both fore and hindlimb asymmetries are measured. It is also an integral part of quantifying effectiveness of nerve and joint blocks. In addition, Dr. Harris uses the “Q” system to aide in objectively assessing pre-purchase evaluations.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy is commonly used for examining the airways and stomach of a horse, but can also be used to look at other structures such as the esophagus, uterus or urinary bladder. Western Prairie Equine Service has a 3 meter flexible scope which allows visualization of the stomach mucosa for assessment of Equine Gastric Ulcers Disease.
Reproduction
Whether you are breeding horses for racing, show competition, or the family farm, a firm understanding of the breeding and foaling process will ensure a successful outcome. At Western Prairie Equine Service, we offer a variety of mare services. Dr. Harris is experienced in breeding evaluations, infertility workups, ultrasonography, artificial insemination (fresh cooled or frozen semen), embryo transfer, foaling services, and neonatal intensive care.
Dentistry
Horses need an annual dental checkup. A horse’s mouth is vital to it’s overall health and well being. If a thorough oral exam reveals any abnormalities of the chewing surface, the horse will need to have the teeth floated to maintain a normal bite so that their food is evenly ground for healthy swallowing and digestion. Dr Harris performs procedures with a PowerFloat, full mouth speculum, a wide array of extractors and elevators, and numerous other motorized and specialized instruments. Western Prairie Equine Service even has specialized tools for the miniature horse.
Nutrition
Horses need the following basic nutritional elements to stay healthy: water carbohydrates (for energy), protein (for tissue support), minerals and vitamins. The key to your horse getting the right nutritional balance for good health is to talk with your veterinarian and get recommendations for your horse based on his or her lifestyle and health concerns. Dr. Harris does nutrition consults and roughage testing. Western Prairie Equine Service is also a Platinum Performance Dealer and has a wide variety of Platinum Products in stock to help your horse to look and perform his best.
